Who was Keith Haring?

Keith Haring was an American artist and activist, born in 1958 in Pennsylvania. Much of his art was created in public spaces, especially using chalk on empty advertising panels in New York City's subway system. Though playful in appearance, his work addressed serious issues like AIDS, apartheid, and social justice.

Haring had a strong connection to the Netherlands. He exhibited in several Dutch museums, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where he had a major solo exhibition in 1986.

During his visit to the Netherlands, he painted a massive mural on the exterior wall of the Stedelijk Museum, a piece that remained hidden until it was rediscovered and restored in 2018.
